Dacoits strike in Ramanathapuram

COIMBATORE, OCT 11. A gang six masked dacoits struck at the house of a State Transport Corporation employee at Palaniappa Nagar in Ramanathapuram area in the small hours and decamped with cash and jewels valued at Rs 1.5 lakhs. It is learnt that the house owner, Liyakath Sherif along with his wife, Sherina, son Khaja and his in-laws were sleeping at home when the dacoits broke into the house. While three dacoits entered the house with casuarina sticks, aruval, knife and sickle three others stood guard outside.

The dacoits reportedly threatened the inmates at knifepoint to part with the valuables. The dacoits took the almirah keys from Liyakath Sherif and decamped with 25 sovereigns of jewellery and Rs 25,000 cash besides a few other valuables. The top police officials visited the scene of crime and held enquiries. Finger print experts and forensic experts also took evidence. A sniffer dog was pressed into service, which smelt the scent and ran up to Tiruchi road.

Explosives seized

The Kattoor police today arrested three persons, Subramanian of Kunnathur near Perundurai, Appukuttan and Johnson belonging to Thrissur in Kerala on charges of bringing 500 detonators to Coimbatore from Kerala without valid permission. The special police team led by Inspector, B. Sakthivel intercepted the trio at Gandhipuram bus stand when they were found moving around under suspicious circumstances. On examination the bags were found to be containing detonators, meant for blasting rocks while digging wells.
