DA increase

Sir, - The Central Government recently sanctioned a two per cent increase in the existing rate of dearness allowance for its employees and pensioners with retrospective effect from July 1, 2001, taking into account the rise in the cost of living index. The Tamil Nadu Government, unlike in the past, has not followed suit and sanctioned a similar increase to its employees and pensioners. The DA increase is sanctioned every six months to compensate the ever-spiralling cost of living. This is common to both the Central and State Government employees and pensioners and so in equity and fairness, the relief must be extended to State Government beneficiaries also without further delay. To compensate the delay and the hardship suffered so far by the beneficiaries, interest on D.A. arrears due from July 1, 2001 should be paid.
