Corporation to resume property tax collection

MANGALORE, AUG. 21. The Mangalore City Corporation will start collecting property tax after a gap of two years. Though the final word is yet to be said about the self-assessment scheme (SAS) for payment of property tax, it has been decided to collect the tax under the old system for now.

The corporation was in a dilemma over SAS for the past two years as the Government insisted that the property tax be collected under SAS. Owing to this confusion, the corporation did not collect the tax.

The Chairman of the Finance Committee of the corporation, Naveen D'Souza, said a delegation comprising the Mayor, Purandaradasa Kulur, and the Chairman of the Karnataka Cashew Development Corporation, Kallige Tharanath Shetty, had met the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, B. Janardhana Poojary, and apprised him of the problems faced by the corporation.

Mr. Poojary spoke to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and the Minister for Municipal Administration, S.R. More, on Friday in Bangalore, Mr. D'Souza said. Mr. Singh and Mr. More promised the corporation that it would be allowed to collect the property tax under the old system and that an order in this regard would be issued soon, he added.

Mr. D'Souza said the corporation would allow property owners to pay the tax for the previous two years in instalments while the tax for this year would have to be paid in full.
