COIMBATORE: After a bitter tussle between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Opposition in the Council over lack of amenities in unapproved layouts, 201 such areas have been identified by Coimbatore Corporation for development.

Three kinds

This is expected to put to rest the row over approved layouts of municipalities and panchayats being treated as unapproved areas by the Corporation after they were made part of the city in 1981.

The Opposition had consistently pointed out that there were three kinds of unapproved layouts. Besides the 201 mentioned, there were those formed after 1981and accorded technical sanction and also those that had come up without any sanction at all. All the three had been languishing without basic amenities till now, the Opposition had pointed out at Council meetings.

The parties had demanded that development works be implemented in at least the layouts added to the city in 1981 and approved by their erstwhile local bodies.

Persistent demand

Persistent demand by the Opposition and walkout from earlier Council meetings and also appeals to Mayor T. Malaravan by AIADMK members resulted in identification and listing of layouts approved before 1981 in the added areas.

The Mayor announced in the Council on Wednesday that 87 layouts in East Zone, 37 in West Zone, 55 in North Zone and 22 in South Zone had been identified during a four-day exercise since September 21. These were layouts added to the city in 1981 and the Opposition had claimed till early this month that the Corporation did not have the exact number of unapproved layouts.

The Mayor said councillors could give officials a list of development works for these layouts. Priority could be accorded to the ones that should be carried out immediately.

Scheme awaited

Now that these layouts have been identified, the rest of the unapproved areas will have to wait for a scheme for regularisation. Already, there are expectations from the ongoing Assembly session - that a scheme will be announced. Indications to this effect had been provided by AIADMK members to residents of these layouts when the Opposition mounted a campaign on this issue and even planned a public meeting a week back.
