Contractors to stage dharna today

BANGALORE, MARCH 24. The deadlock between the members of the Karnataka State Contractors' Association and the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) continued for the third day on Wednesday.

The contractors, who are protesting against the non-clearance of bills by the BMP, have organised a demonstration in front of the BMP Head Office on Thursday morning.

The general secretary of the association, D. Kempanna, said the members met the Bangalore Development Minister, Ramalinga Reddy, on Wednesday and sought his intervention. "The Minister has promised to arrange a joint meeting with the BMP Commissioner, M.R. Sreenivasa Murthy, on Friday to settle the matter amicably. We have made it clear to him that we want the BMP to clear the arrears of at least five months," he said.

The president of the association, A.S. Chinnaswamy Raju, and the chairman of the Karnataka chapter of the Builders' Association of India, K.L. Mohan, will address the contractors on Thursday. The contractors engaged by the Public Works Department and the garbage clearance and electrical contractors have extended support to the association.
