Common man's message

Sir, - Why did the people of Tamil Nadu give such a resounding victory to the AIADMK? Why has Ms. Jayalalitha, considered defiled by the same set of people in 1996, been preferred? The common man who voted her to power would safely answer each of these questions: to him the truth lies elsewhere. The Government that ruled him between 1996 and 2001 never cared for his basic needs. He was squeezed into oblivion. A techno-park or a hi-tech park cannot cater to the basic needs of the common man. A Government that cares for the underprivileged in a State or a country is allowed to rule so long. The perfect example is West Bengal. Tamil Nadu sends a grim reminder to the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, as well as to the rulers in New Delhi.

Sir,- The debacle of the DMK-led alliance in the Assembly elections should serve as an eye-opener to party leaders. Mr. M. Karunanidhi failed to consolidate his party's position by not addressing the many burning problems of the people, and worse still, by forging injudicious alliances with caste-based parties and severing links with established parties with strong roots like the PMk, the TMC and the MDMK. The least Mr. Karunanidhi can do now is to let a younger leader take over the DMK.
