Citizens' panel blames officials for bad roads

UDUPI, AUG. 14. The Udupi Zilla Nagarika Samiti on Friday urged the officials of the Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project to repair 14 damaged roads in Udupi city within 30 days.

In a memorandum submitted to the Executive Engineer of the project here, the samiti general secretary, Nityananda Volakadu, alleged that the officials were lackadaisical about implementing the project. Because of this, 14 important roads in the city were ridden with potholes. These roads had been dug up for laying water pipelines and sewer lines. Even the patchwork undertaken with funds from the Urban Development Fund recently had been rendered useless.

The project officials were testing the patience of the people, Mr. Volakadu said. The badly affected were Sharada Kalyan Mantap-Beedinagudde-Mission Compound Road, Ammanni Ramanna Shetty Road, Gundibail Road, Brahmagiri-Jodukatte Road, Indralli-Manipal Road, Kalmady Road, Moodabettu-Kodavoor Road, Indiranagar-MGM Road, Lakshminagar-Malpe Road, Doddanagudde-Perampalli Road, Manipal-MJC-Alevoor Road, Ambagilu-Durgaparmeshwari Road, and Bailoor-Marpally Temple Road.
