Chandy to attend rally if invited by YC(I) chief

KOZHIKODE, JULY 20. The Congress(I) leader, Mr. Oommen Chandy, has said that he would attend the controversial Youth Congress(I) rally in Thrissur, if its State president invites him.

Answering questions at a press conference here today, Mr. Chandy said the Congress(I) being a big democratic party, discipline cannot be enforced. Individual members should exercise self- control. The organisers should realise whether holding such a rally would amount to breach of party discipline.

When insisted on an answer to the question whether he would attend the rally or not, Mr. Chandy said he would do so if he was invited by the Youth Congress(I) State president. He added that it was time to reconstitute the leadership of all feeder organisations of the party. Mr. Chandy said the decision of the Cabinet not to appeal against the High Court verdict on the Plus Two case amounted to an admission of guilt.

He said the Education Minister, Mr. P. J. Joseph, had announced in the Assembly that the Government would move the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict on the Plus Two issue. If the Government had backtracked on this promise, it should be out of fear that the Supreme Court would also criticise the Government for the manner in which Plus Two courses were sanctioned.
