Cauvery issue: 'DMK Govt. has betrayed people'

THANJAVUR, JULY 20. The All-India general secretary of Congress(I) and Mayiladuthurai MP, Mr. Mani Shankar Aiyar has said the DMK Government had betrayed the people of the State Nadu with respect to Cauvery water issue.

Speaking at a meeting organised to discuss the Congress(I) president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi's visit during Kamaraj's birth anniversary on August five, Mr. Aiyar said till the agreement of 1924 lapsed in 1974, 600 tmc ft of water was let from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu in the Cauvery.

In 1991, the State agreed to release of 205 tmc ft water as per the interim award of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal. This was agreed upon as the Government felt that cultivation needs of the State were met by the water release.

In 1998, Cauvery River Water Authority was formed and had met only twice in two years. In both meetings, it was pointed out that Karnataka had released quantities of water lesser than the quantum agreed in 1991.

In the second meeting held recently, Karnataka agreed to release only six tmc ft when the due was 20 tmc ft for June.

Mr. Aiyar said he would raise the issue in the coming session of the Parliament and urged the State unit of the party to protest against the decision.
