Campus interview at varsity

COIMBATORE, JULY 24 . Over 4,000 students from colleges affiliated to Bharathiar University are expected to turn up for a career fair and campus interview to be conducted by seven leading software companies on July 26 and 27, Vice-Chancellor S. Sivasubramanian, said here recently.

He told The Hindu that the interviewers would conduct preliminary screening for students seeking careers in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, to fill openings in voice-based call centres, transaction processing and customer service zones.

"We are inviting 50 students from each of the 86 affiliated colleges, to attend the career fair. Each company will give a presentation lasting ten to 20 minutes, and then hold interviews to meet their job requirements," he said.

Allsec Technologies, Scope International, Wipro Spectramind, Officetiger, Lason, Shutterland and GE Capital Services would participate in the event, which is being organised by the university in collaboration with the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT). The University had allotted separate classrooms to the companies, so that they would be able to give their presentations and carry out interviews for separate batches of students on both days.

After the first phase of screening and selection, the companies would conduct the final phase of recruitment individually at Chennai. This was expected to take a week to ten days, based on the requirements of each company.

Assessing potential

"This is another way of assessing the potential of Bharathiar University, and the first step in starting the BU-ELCOT City on the campus. We will be demonstrating to the companies that we have the potential to supply the human resource needed by the technology park," he added.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the University was formulating a one-semester certificate course on the lines suggested by ELCOT, to prepare graduating students for careers in business process outsourcing. Students of any discipline could take this course to give them an edge in careers related to information technology enabled services (ITES).
