Call centre raided

BANGALORE Sept. 26. The City Crime Branch sleuths raided a call centre, which allegedly cheated the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) to the tune of Rs. 1 crore by converting international calls into local calls and seized equipment worth Rs. 40 lakh. Five persons, including the main accused, Syed Sabbith Ahmed of Cambridge Layout, Ulsoor, have been arrested.

The police said the call centre, housed in Oxford Chamber Apartment on Airport Road, received about 60,000 international calls from an agent in the U.S. via Internet in the past 20 days. Bypassing the BSNL and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) network, the calls were converted into local calls using an equipment called "router." This had resulted in a Rs. 1-crore loss to the BSNL, the police said.

Syed Sabbith Ahmed, an electronics engineer, was employed as chief technical officer in a private firm. The other accused have been identified as Nadeem Pasha (24), B.P. Daniel Graddick (26), Prasanna (25), and Gopinath (20).
