BSNL launches broadband service

Bangalore Dec. 24. The BSNL Bangalore Telecom District on Wednesday launched its broadband services in the city under the "DataOne Broadband" name. Bangalore is the first city to get this service in the country.

The service would be commercially available to users in four exchange areas of Central, Ulsoor, Koramangala, and City. Initially, 1,200 connections would be made available till March 31, and after that, 500 connections would be added every month, the Principal General Manager, BSNL Bangalore Telecom District, B.R. Baliga, said.

The broadband service would include video streaming, video on demand, high-speed Internet, video-conferencing, games, and e-learning facilities. Set-top boxes and customer premises equipment would be made available with various options such as cash down payment, monthly instalments, and financing and details would be available with the application forms.

The forms would be available from BSNL Customer Service Centres from January 1.

The basic residential broadband service, DataOne Standard package, would cost Rs. 999 a month.

Those choosing it get high-speed Internet at 256 Kbps, download limit up to 500 MB and beyond that at Rs. 1.20 per MB, two live broadcast channels over three Mbps, last mile connectivity simultaneously with voice service, games on demand, audio conferences, and e-learning.

An average "video on demand session" will cost Rs. 35 per view. The tariff for commercial users is to be announced later.

The BSNL will provide other value-added services in future. These include a "family reunion" package of audio conferencing for domestic users, personal websites, broadcast digital TV, and 3D interactive learning modes.
