`Bring out details of all property in city'

BANGALORE, MARCH 17. The Vakilara Sangha president, Jagadeesh, on Thursday urged the Government to present a white paper with comprehensive information on the residential and commercial property in the city, including cinemas, hospitals, marriage halls, guesthouses and other establishments.

Participating in a seminar on property tax in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) areas here, Mr. Jagadeesh said although corruption was rampant in property tax collection, nobody was being held accountable and the process itself was not transparent.

The Government's inefficiency and the BMP's faults had caused the downfall of the property tax's significance, he alleged.

The Mayor and corporators, he said, should understand the importance of property tax collection and actively work towards improving it. The Government should also come forward to boost property tax generation.

The former Chief Minister, M. Veerappa Moily, the former Chief Secretary A. Ravindra, and the Janaagraha campaign coordinator, Ramesh Ramanathan, also spoke.

Mr. Moily said the present self-assessment scheme could remain but the clarity and transparency of the process could be improved by using the latest scientific and technological inputs.
