BJP accuses Minister of bias

Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has accused the Minister for Minorities Welfare and Youth Affairs, Jabbar Khan Honnali, who is also district in-charge, for indirectly blaming Hindu organisations for instances of communal tension in the district at a peace committee meeting held here on Friday.

A meeting of the party's office-bearers condemned such insinuations at Hindu organisations.

According to a press release issued here on Monday from Vishweshwar Bhat B., general secretary of the party unit, D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Mangalore MP, said that Mr. Honnali's remark that the funeral procession of murder accused, Ananthu, sparked the violence is an attempt to cover up the failure of "government machinery."

The Minister's action sends a message that that the government cares only about welfare of minorities, he alleged.

Pratap Simha Nayak, president of district unit, termed the Minister's remarks as unfortunate, especially in a district which is regarded as communally-sensitive.

He opined that ministers should not be biased.

Urging the district administration to take steps to arrest the killers of Ananthu, Mr. Nayak said the BJP has decided to shoulder the responsibility of helping his children complete their education.
