Bhoomi puja for levelling works

MANIPAL, DEC. 6. The bhoomi Puja ceremony for levelling works for the proposed District Offices Complex was held at End Point here on Monday.

The Udupi MLA, K. Raghupati Bhat, and the Deputy Commissioner, T. Sham Bhatt, were present on the occasion. The Karkala MLA, Sunil Kumar, and the MLC, V.S. Acharya, also visited End Point.

Later, addressing presspersons, Mr. Bhatt clarified that the puja was held for the levelling works and not for the complex.

He said the 10 acres of land where the puja was performed belonged to the Government. It was here that the complex would come up. The Revenue Secretary, Jamadar, who had visited the district recently, had inspected all sites for the complex, and concluded that End Point was best suited for it.

He said a Manipal-based education institution had approached the court over the land at End Point. It had filed a writ appeal and sought a stay order. But in September 2003, the High Court rejected its plea.

MAHE reaction

The Vice-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), H.S. Ballal, told The Hindu that the matter connected to the End Point was in the courts. "We are studying the matter,'' he added.
