Bad roads dominate Udupi CMC meet

UDUPI, NOV. 29. The issue of bad roads in the city dominated the general body meeting of the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) here on Monday.

Raising the issue, the Leader of the Opposition, S. Ramananda Bhat, said that the roads in the city were in an extremely bad condition. It took a minimum of half an hour to travel half a kilometre on the roads because of the digging works taken up for the implementation of the Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project (KUDCEMP) under the ADB scheme. There should be cooperation between the CMC and the KUDCEMP on the issue of repairing roads on a priority. The CMC should set a timeframe for repairing the roads, he said.

Coordination sought

The acting President of the CMC, Gujjady Prabhakar Nayak, said that the officials of the KUDCEMP had been told to undertake works with due caution.

The roads had already been dug by departments such as the telecom and others. All agencies should take up the digging works in total coordination with one another, he said.

A meeting between the Deputy Commissioner, the officials of the KUDCEMP and the MLA, K. Raghupati Bhat, on this issue would be held shortly, he said. The KUDCEMP works were to yet start on a full scale. The people of the city would have to put up with the inconvenience for at least a year, Mr. Nayak said.

Dog menace

The councillor, Vasanthi Shetty, said that stray dog menace was increasing in the city. Should the municipality think of the welfare of these dogs, when people were getting bitten? she asked. The Municipal Commissioner, H.S. Rudreshgowda, said that the Society for Prevention of Cruelty against Animals would object to action against the dogs.

Mr. Hegde said that the Government had only issued a circular in this regard. A circular was not an order, he said.

Property tax

The acting President said that the Self-Assessment Scheme (SAS) on property tax was still in force. There was no change in the method of collecting taxes under the SAS. The property tax for 2002-03 and 2003-04 could be paid without fine before December 31. The last date for paying this tax without fine for 2004-05 was March 31. Any delay would invite a two per cent fine on the tax, he said.
