Assault case: Youth Congress seeks action

MANGALORE, MARCH 17. The district unit of the Youth Congress today condemned the stripping and assault of two persons at Moodabettu near Udupi on Sunday.

Addressing presspersons here, the President of the unit, Bondala Jagannatha Shetty, said those responsible for the incident should be arrested. The incident is a violation of the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

The administration of Udupi should extend moral support and protect the two victims, he said.

He noted that there is a need to settle issues pertaining to transportation of cattle as they could foment communal clashes. Organisations should create awareness among people not to sell their cattle to slaughterhouses as this could lead to communal clashes. To a query, he said the Youth Congress will think about involving itself in creating awareness among people on not to sell their cattle.

Mr. Shetty alleged that some people had converted a building at Urwa into a goshala. The building is located on government land. The cows there are in a bad condition, he said and added that the district administration should hand over the cows to goshalas being managed by seers.


The district unit of the Indian Union Muslim League has condemned the stripping and assault of two persons near Udupi recently.

The unit, in a memorandum to the Governor, urged him to intervene to provide justice to the victims. It alleged that the administration has become a puppet in the hands of communal forces.

The district unit of the Forum for Democracy and Communal Amity has also condemned the incident. It demanded an investigation into the incident.

The district unit of the Hindu Yuva Sena took out a march from Car Street to Service Bus Stand to protest against what it termed "political attempts" to implicate it in the stripping and assault case, here on Thursday.

Speaking at a public meeting, the leaders of the sena said nobody should be allowed to take law into their own hands. Some persons are trying to falsely implicate the sena in the stripping and assault case, which is condemnable, they said.

A resolution passed by the sena said police should stop arresting its activists and the cases filed against them should be withdrawn. The district administration should take action against those violating the Cow Slaughter Prohibition Act, the resolution added.

`Blot on civil society'

The district unit of the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti on Thursday condemned the stripping and assualt case at Moodabettu near Udupi on Sunday night.

In a press release issued here, the convener of the samiti's Udupi unit, Jayan Malpe, said the incident is a blot on civil society. He alleged that the Sangh Parivar is behind the act. The State Government should take action and bring the culprits to book, he added.
