'Anjuman plot to invade India'

VIJAYAWADA, JULY 20. Police say that there was a deeper conspiracy behind the serial bomb blasts to destabilise the country and that a Pakistani national had organised and supervised the blasts at Guntur and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The arrest of two persons in Hyderabad and three others in Krishna district in the last 12 hours has unravelled the ``intentions and activities'' of Deendar Anjuman under the leadership of Khaliq-ul-Zaman of Nuzvid. He is alleged to be the kingpin and more important than Ibrahim (who was injured in a Maruti van blast in Bangalore).

The Director-General of Police, Mr. H.J. Dora, Andhra Pradesh, told presspersons here today that the arrested persons had directives to create communal dissensions and cause disturbances and prepare the ground so that their guru Hasan, with nine lakh `Pathans` on horses, could invade and capture India some time next year and spread Islam.

Mr. Dora said Hasan`s son Jahid Pasha, came from Mardan in Pakistan and supervised arrangements for bomb blasts in Machilipatnam and Guntur. He left India the day after the Guntur mosque blast. The arrested persons also mobilised funds through dacoity.

Police arrested Zaleel Chowdary and Dr. Wajahadulla, secretary and treasurer of the Hyderabad branch of Deendar Anjuman. Zaleel Chowdary is the son-in-law of Hasan, head of the Deendar Anjuman cult based in Mardan in Pakistan. He revealed that Hasan respected Khaliq-ul-Zaman of Nuzvid and offered him a seat on his right side and wanted the workers to follow his directions. Khaliq thus emerged strong and played a pivotal role.

While Khaliq worked as an auditor in the Krishna district cooperative central bank at Nuzvid, his brother Shamshad worked as a conductor in APSRTC at Nuzvid. Another brother Zeelani, a radio mechanic at Nuzvid, was trained in Pakistan in making improvised bombs. The three brothers produced and supplied the bombs. They are at large now.

Police arrested Hanif, alias Anwar, an RTC conductor at Nuzvid, Mastan, a railway employee at Kondapalli and Fareed, an engineer at Movva in Krishna district this morning. Fareed received training in arms and explosives in Pakistan. Hanif, along with Syed Baji, a student, took part in the bomb blast in the Guntur mosque. He said Khaliq had directed them to place the bomb near the mosque. They, accordingly, went to the mosque, offered `namaz' and left the bag containing the bomb. Khaliq had wanted them to place the bomb in the mosque because earlier blasts in churches and temples did not cause the desired disturbance.

Hanif also admitted, Mr. Dora said, that he, along with seven others, committed dacoity at Gampalagudem in February to raise money for their activities. They waylaid the cashier of Andhra Bank, injured him with a knife before decamping with Rs. 4 lakhs. They sent Rs. 1 lakh to their guru in Pakistan through channels yet to be established and purchased 10 acres of mango orchard near Reddygudem in Krishna district for their activities and training the cadre.
