Amarnath yatra stopped temporarily

SRINAGAR, JULY 20. Authorities today stopped the Amarnath yatra, both from the Pahalgam and Baltal routes following overnight rains which lashed the hazardous track leading to the holy cave shrine in the Kashmir Himalayas.

The yatra was temporarily stopped to prevent any untoward incident, an official spokesman said adding that pilgrims will be allowed to move forward once rains abate and the weather improves. He said till Wednesday, 40,817 pilgrims had reached Pahalgam on their way to the shrine.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Government has decided not to allow any unregistered pilgrim to proceed to the Amarnath cave.

``Only those pilgrims carrying proper registration would be allowed on the date for which his registration was made in terms of the recommendations of the Nitesh Sengupta Commission,'' the spokesman said.
