Action will be taken against errant drivers: SP

Coimbatore: Drivers who cause fatal accidents will be dealt with severely, said the Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, P.C. Thenmozhi, here on Monday.

Ms. Thenmozhi told reporters that it had been decided to get tough with the errant drivers especially in the wake of accidents caused by lorries on Sunday and Monday claiming seven lives on Coimbatore - Palladam Road in Coimbatore District. Co-ordinating with the Transport Department, action would be initiated to cancel licence of drivers and permits and registration certificates of vehicles involved in fatal accidents.

Drive against rash driving, speeding and overloading would be stepped up on all arterial roads in the district, she said.

The SP also cautioned against using goods carriers for transporting people in the rural areas.

Such vehicles would be confiscated, she added. To ensure compliance with road rules, special teams were deputed to keep tab on both private and TNSTC buses.

The scheduled departure time of buses on all the major moffussil sectors such as Coimbatore - Mettuppalayam, Coimbatore - Tirupur and Coimbatore - Pollachi roads would be monitored.
