A sea of supporters

BANGALORE, NOV. 29. It was a show of strength by the newly elected Mayor, R. Narayanswamy, on Monday. Hordes of his supporters followed him into the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) Council hall and garlanded him. The dais where the Mayor and his Deputy were seated was strewn with flower petals.

The entire visitors' gallery was packed with his supporters and family members. His supporters also gathered in the hall where he held his maiden press conference.

More seats

Unlike last year, proper seating arrangements for former mayors had been made in the officers' gallery and they did not have to witness the proceedings standing.

A celebration

The BMP Council hall resembled a marriage choultry on Monday. The entrance to the hall was decorated with garlands and flower arrangements, and bouquets greeted people at the main entrance.

Unusually, though, the corporators, especially women, were dressed in simple attire. Most of the women corporators posed for photographs with the Kanakapura MP, Tejaswini Sriramesh, who walked up to each of them and exchanged pleasantries.

A slip

Although the presiding officer, M. Udayshankar, announced the election of Mr. Narayanswamy and N. Shantakumari as Mayor and Deputy Mayor, respectively, he forgot to "install" them in office. He called them to the dais only after the Opposition members reminded him.

MP's gesture

When the new Mayor was being garlanded and greeted by one and all, Ms. Shantakumari was "missing." She was later escorted to the dais. Realising that Ms. Shantakumari was feeling a little overwhelmed by all the attention, Ms. Tejaswini rushed to the dais and garlanded her.

Yet again

Traffic was disrupted at N.R. Square when the new Mayor was leaving the BMP Council hall. The reason? His supporters were bursting crackers on the road to celebrate the occasion, unmindful of the nuisance they were causing to motorists.
