'A patriot of outstanding commitment'

MUMBAI, AUG. 30. The Maharashtra Governor, Dr. P. C. Alexander, today described Mr. G. K. Moopanar as a ``patriot of outstanding commitment to the nation's cause''. In a condolence message, he said Mr. Moopanar had ``served the country with great sacrifices to his own comforts. I admired him''. The condolence message was sent to Mr. Govindavasam, Mr. Moopanar's son, in Chennai today.

The Orissa Governor, Mr. M.M. Rajendran, said the passing away of Mr. Moopanar , known for his high integrity in public life and value-based politics, was a great loss to public life in Tamil Nadu and the country.

The former Prime Minister, Mr. H.D. Deve Gowda, noted that despite being ``born with a silver spoon'' Mr. Moopanar had a soft corner for the have-nots and worked for the betterment of these sections. In his death, the country had lost a leader of concern and commitment.

Recalling the ``many occasions'' of meeting with Mr. Moopanar, the West Bengal Governor, Mr. Viren J. Shah, said he found the late leader as a person of great simplicity, clear ideology and dedication to the service of the down-trodden. This was a loss not only to the people of Tamil Nadu, but for India, as men of such character were becoming rare.

The Kerala Chief Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony, said Mr. Moopanar, a respected leader, upheld the high ideals of the Indian National Congress. He was a shining presence in the national and Tamil Nadu politics and contributed much to resolution of various crises in national politics and the Congress.
