A bridge hangs in balance

TIRUPUR: Though the construction of a bridge across the Jammanai Pallam in Tirupur at an outlay of Rs. 10 lakhs is `technically' over six months back, it is remaining unused for want of approach roads.

If the bridge that connects Santhaipettai area on Palladam Road and KVR Nagar of Karuvampalayam on Mangalam Road comes into existence, traffic flow on the arterial areas of the town such as old bus stand and Municipal office junction will reduce to some extent.

The construction of the bridge was carried out under the Integrated Development of Small and Medium Towns Programme (IDSMT) in 2003.

According to sources, the contractor has completed the work and opted out of completing the work on approach roads citing escalation of cost as reason.

G. Rathinasamy, councillor, blames the officials. "When preparing the estimates and plan they should have considered all aspects." People of KVR Nagar, Karuvampalayam and surroundings are suffering a lot to travel to the Santhaipettai area.

According to officials the length of the bridge is not sufficient, as it has only two vents and it covers 75 per cent of the canal. And to ensure free flow of excess water one more vent is needed and the local body is working it out.

When contacted, the commissioner in-charge, G. Ravi, said a plan at an outlay of Rs. 10 lakhs was underway to lay approach roads and to construct a pipe culvert adjacent to the bride.

The work would start as soon as the Municipal council approves it. He said all the works would be commenced in a month and completed at the earliest.
