8 injured in group clash at Arkalgud

ARKALGUD, JULY 20. At least eight people were injured, two of them seriously, in clashes between some persons belonging to the Kuruba and Vokkaliga communities here today.

Police clamped prohibitory orders until 5 p.m. on Monday as a precautionary measure. Five of the injured were said to be policemen. Senior district and police officials held meetings to defuse the situation. Friday's weekly shandy has been cancelled.

According to reports, Shiva and Manja belonging to the Kuruba community, from Kurubaragere village, allegedly made fun of Chikke Gowda, a Vokkaliga from Honnavalli. This led to an altercation with Shiva and Manja assaulting the latter. Chikke Gowda filed a complaint at the town police station.

The two accused, who were released on bail this morning, appeared for a reconciliation meeting convened by the village elders at the Inspection Bungalow. But members from Chikke Gowda's community allegedly pelted the opposite group with stones.

A mob from Honnavalli village then went on the rampage, destroying houses and property belonging to the Kuruba community. Eyewitness stated that the entire town was littered with stones and broken bottles. Apart from the policemen injured in the clashes, the other three were said to be civilians caught in between the two clashing groups. The situation now, according to police reports, was peaceful, but tense.
