8 die as bridge collapses

SHIMLA, JULY 12. Eight persons including two policemen were feared killed today, when a vital bridge at Sholding on Hindustan-Tibet national highway in tribal Kinnaur district, 180 km from here, was washed away by flash floods.

The policemen were on duty at the bridge while six others were crossing the bridge in a tempo when a huge mass of debris pushed by swirling waters following heavy rains eroded the base of the bridge, the DGP, Mr. T. R. Mahajan, said.

Kinnaur district has been cut off from the rest of Himachal Pradesh following the incident. One person was seriously injured and rushed to the hospital.

Mr. Mahajan said one body had been recovered so far and search was on for the others.
