5 held on charge of murdering scribe

MYSORE DEC. 7. Five persons accused of murdering the editor of a Mandya-based newspaper were arrested by the Mandya West Police.

This was disclosed to presspersons in Mandya by the Superintendent of Police, Malini Krishnamurthy, on Friday. However, Cheeranahalli Shankar, the prime accused in the murder of journalist, S.K. Ramanna, is still at large.

The arrested are Shivaramu (28), Gopala (28), Naveen (21), Shashikumar (22), and Manja (21). While Shivaramu and Gopala were arrested from Srirampuram area in Bangalore, the other three were nabbed from Ankanahalli village in Channapatna taluk.

Ms. Krishnamurthy said the arrests were delayed as the accused had left Mandya town soon after committing the crime. She said a manhunt had been launched for Cheeranahalli Shankar, who hatched the conspiracy.

It is learnt that Ramanna had been helping Jadeja Ravi, a business rival of Shivaramu, and he had also assisted Ravi in taking over an agency from Shivaramu. Angered by this, Shivaramu along with Cheeranahalli Shankar, allegedly decided to eliminate Ramanna. The journalist was killed on November 24 while he was returning home around 8.30 p.m.
