3 areas to get slum tag?

MANGALORE, FEB. 26. The Mangalore City Corporation council on Thursday decided to recommend to the Government to declare Urundadi area near Kavoor, Bangra Kulur, and Kulur areas as slums.

Presiding over the meeting of the corporation council, the Mayor, K. Diwakar, asked the members to submit a list of such areas, if any, in their constituencies to recommend to the Government to declare them as slums.

The removal of unauthorised petty shops from pavements also figured in the meeting. The Opposition Leader, Mariyamma Thomas, alleged that the officials concerned had failed to implement the council's decision in this regard and the Mayor was not evincing interest in pursuing the matter. Shankar Bhat, a BJP corporator, alleged that the corporation had purchased 12 fogging machines without the knowledge of the House. He said the machines had been purchased without the knowledge of the members of the Standing Committee on Health, the Commissioner, the Mayor, and the District Health Officer.

The latter, who was present in the meeting, said the purchase of the machines had not been brought to his notice.

The Mayor asked the Commissioner to fax a message to the Government regarding the absence of the Executive Engineer of the Mangalore Electricity Supply Company from the meeting. He said the official never attended the council meetings.
