15 IT appellate tribunals set up

NEW DELHI, JULY 20. The Centre has set up 15 new benches of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal and of them seven-one each at Chandigarh, Jodhpur, Rajkot, Panaji, Visakhapatnam and two at Bangalore-have become functional.

Of the remaining eight, five at Mumbai and two at Delhi are in the process of being set up and one at Agra will be inaugurated on August 20. The ITAT has 53 benches spread over 24 States all over India.

According to an official press release, the number of appeals which was only 1,607 during 1941-42 had increased to 53,980 in 1979-80.

The pendency increased to 2.73 lakh cases in October 1994 and crossed the three lakh mark in March 1998. Correspondingly, the benches of the tribunal which was six in 1941-42 rose to 30 in 1971-72 and increased to 38 in 1973-74.
