12 militants killed in Assam

GUWAHATI, JULY 12. Twelve militants were killed in an encounter with the Army at Bholapunji, a remote village on the Cachar- Manipur border in the early hours of Tuesday, sources said here today.

Three AK-56 rifles, one 9 mm carbine, two .303 rifles, three SLR rifles, and 742 rounds of ammunition were recovered.

Army sources said troops had moved into the area on Monday night after information on the movement of militants. The Army the militants were ``unidentified''. Police officials could not be contacted but sources at Silchar said that seven militants belonged to a dissident group of the NSCN(I-M) and the rest to a Muslim fundamentalist group, People's United Liberation Force (PULF). Sources said the two groups along with another outfit, DHD, were responsible for extortion and kidnapping of tea garden employees.
