Kochi duo wins quiz contest

Hyderabad Nov. 1. After a day-long battle, Ram Keshav and Azmi Habeeb of Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Kochi, emerged winners in the finals of the all-India The Hindu Young World Quiz, 2003, held here on Saturday. Regional finalists from 10 centres took part in the contest which saw the teams' fortunes fluctuating from one round to another.

Ranjani M. and R. Venkatakrishnan of Padma Seshadri Balbhavan, Chennai, were the first runner-up and Jayendran Srinivasan and Justin Thomas of Loyola School, Thiruvananthapuram, were second runner-up. The Delhi Public School represented by Akash Bansal and Avik Ganguli, ended up last.

Quizmaster, V.V. Ramanan of Quizwallahs, a professional team, conducted the quiz which was sponsored by Eveready Batteries in association with Coca Cola and Andhra Bank. The other co-sponsors were: Britannia, Camlin, Hercules Cycles, Titan Fastrack, Competition Success Review, NIIT, Sify iway, Hansaplast, Liberty Shoes, Base Terminal, Visu Consultants, Sangeet Sagar, Paradise Hotels.

Arjun awardee and ace shuttler, Pullela Gopichand, gave away the prizes at a function at the Hari Hara Kala Bhavan. The first three winning teams in the all-India final were presented cash awards of Rs. 16,000, Rs. 12,000 and Rs. 8000 by The Hindu and the regional winners Rs. 8000, Rs. 6000 and Rs. 4000. This was in addition to the scores of prizes given by the sponsors.

In the regional round held earlier, the Little Flower Junior College, Hyderabad, represented by Abhiroop Datta and T. Kartik, emerged the winners. The other positions went to Shrey Badhani and S.M. Pounappa (Army School, Malkajgiri), Sriraj Ramesh and Anirudh P. (Kendriya Vidyalaya, Picket), P. Vishal and N. Yashwant Ram (Ratna Junior College), Shrinivasan Gowrishankar and Daanish Raj (Hyderabad Public School) and Vivek R. Krishnan and Puneeth K. Samani (DAV Public School, Safilguda).

In the regional round, 766 teams from Hyderabad and Secunderabad and the neighbouring districts took part in the preliminary contest. The stakes were really high with a lot of attractive prizes to be picked up and the queries were tough.
