Efforts on to destroy centuries-old social values: Sonia

New Delhi Oct. 31. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, today said that efforts were being made to destroy centuries-old values of social amity and brotherhood and appealed to the people to be united to frustrate the designs of such parochial and divisive forces.

``Attempts were being made to destroy centuries-old values. We all should be united to confront such forces'', Ms. Gandhi said. after presenting the 17th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration, 2002, here.

The awards were jointly presented to the Ram-Rahim Nagar Slum Dwellers Association, Aaman Pathik Peace Volunteer Group (both from Ahmedabad) for their uncommon courage and compassion of the common people of Gujarat. The former Prime Ministers, P.V. Narasimha Rao, I.K. Gujral, senior party leaders Mohsina Kidwai, Arjun Singh, Ahmed Patel, Manmohan Singh, Shivraj Patil, Chief Ministers of Delhi and Rajasthan and Sheila Dixit t were among those present. — PTI
