dated November 11, 1952: Government directs officials not to accept presents

Officers and servants of Government and local bodies were instructed by the Government of Madras to stop accepting, on occasions like weddings, valuable gifts from friends, and especially from other government servants, and to courteously return such gifts when presented. The Government order pointed out that while presents and gifts of trifling value like books and pieces of cloth had been traditional, gifts like cheques and silver plates from friends and especially from other officers and servants were not only undesirable and embarrassing to all concerned, but would also lead to unnecessary comment. If such gifts were accepted, the custom would keep on growing, and similar presents have to be made as a practice.
