dated March 18, 1955: Action against Bevan

The British Labour Party on March 16 disowned the Left-wing leader, Mr. Aneurin Bevan, who is accused of trying to usurp the party leadership. By 141 votes to 112 it decided to "withdraw the whip" from the 57-year-old Welshman who has often openly challenged the decisions of Mr. Clement Attlee, the party leader. The charge against him was that he defied a party rule insisting on acceptance of majority decisions on policy.
