dated June 14, 1955: Space travel

A Russian scientist claims that his colleagues have solved theoretical problems of using atomic energy to drive interplanetary space ships and are working on the establishment of a control station to guide such vessels. The scientist, Mr. V.A. Leshkovtsev, speaking over Moscow Radio said the practical side of atom-powered space ships still remained to be worked out, the main problem being that of providing atomic furnace walls which could resist enormous heat. Mr. Leshkovtsev said a committee set up by the Soviet Academy of Sciences was working on the establishment of the control station, which would record all phenomena connected with the space ship engines.
