dated February 27,1954: Coup in Syria

A twelve-hour armed rebellion in Syria on February 25 has succeeded in forcing President Adib Shishakly to resign and leave his country. He has been replaced by 79-year-old former President, Hashem el Attasi, the man whose Government he overthrew in a bloodless army revolution in December 1951.

The announcement of the President's quitting office was made from the Damascus Radio. It broadcast a farewell message by the President. The message said: "In order to avoid bloodshed and in order to safeguard the unity of the nation and of the army to which I wished to sacrifice my life, I submit my resignation to the generous Syrian people who honoured me by electing me as President of the Republic and granted me their confidence."The rebels, now in power in Syria, from their headquarters in Aleppo, sent a communiqu to the Agence France Presse's office in Beirut, requesting the news agency to broadcast the communiqu so that the world could be informed of the motive and purpose of the rebellion.
