dated December 7, 1954: Attendance in Parliament

A PSP member, Dr. Choithram Gidwani, demanded in the Lok Sabha on December 6 that the salaries of members who absented themselves from the House for too long a period should be cut. He said: "If a member is present here only for three days in a year, he can continue to draw his salary of Rs.400 a month. I find that certain members have remained absent for long periods. They just come once every 55 days or so and then go away. This is very unfair to the poor tax-payer." The Speaker, Mr. Mavlankar, said that the suggestion could be considered by the Committee on Absence of Members. Under the present rules, a member need apply for leave of absence only if the period is 60 days or more.
