dated November 9, 1959: Soviet assurance

Mr. Nikita Khrushchev, chief host at a reception in Moscow last night marking Russia’s 42nd anniversary celebration of the October Revolution, told an Indian correspondent that “he would do everything to help in finding a solution to the India-China border dispute.” The Soviet Prime Minister, brimming over with holiday good spirits, spoke briefly with the correspondent during an interval in the dancing at the reception, held in the great Kremlin Palace and attended by 2,000 guests. Chatting with other foreign correspondents, Mr. Khrushchev said, “There are no people living in that area,” when asked about the border dispute.
