dated May 9, 1958: Controlled disarmament

Foreign ministers of the NATO alliance declared in a communiqué issued in Copenhagen on May 7 at the end of their three day conference that controlled disarmament should be one of the main questions on the agenda of summit talks with Russia. The ministers agreed that the alliance’s outstanding achievements in the past year had been “the remarkable progress in the strengthening of political consultation. In addition, every effort should be made to ensure economic prosperity by the expansion of international trade and by aid to under-developed countries.
