dated February 2, 1959: Kamban memorial

The erection of a suitable memorial to Kamban at his birth place in Therazhundur in Tanjore District, in the same way as Shakespeare has been honoured at his birth place at Stratford-on-Avon, was suggested by Dr. C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar, at a function organised in Madras on February 1. Dr. Ramaswami Aiyar was at home to a large gathering of scholars, litterateurs, historians and journalists. Photographs of the temple where a stone image of Kamban is installed, the garden site of the Kamban Memorial and maps and plans of the locality were exhibited, along with palm leaf manuscripts, books and notes loaned by the Government Oriental Manuscripts Library. Collections from Dr. U.V. Swaminatha Aiyar Library, the private library containing valuable notes and copies of various editions of Kamba Ramayana were also on view.
