dated February 2, 1959: Democratic methods

Pandit Pant, Union Home Minister, addressing a meeting in Gorakhpur on February 1, said that dictatorship or totalitarianism was no panacea for any ill because the remedy was worse than the disease. He said that democracy, an ideal to which India was wedded, was any time preferable because it assured equal rights to all. It gave powers to the masses who could vote out a person or a policy they did not like. In that process, the people got the feeling that the country as well as the Government was theirs and at their command.
