CHENNAI Oct. 31. The Toda Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research, Japan, has named the agriculture scientist, M.S. Swaminathan, for the Toda Award for Peace Achievement, for his "unique and invaluable contributions to deepening and enhancing understanding of plant genetics and contributing immensely to the welfare of humankind".

The citation signed by the Founder of the Toda Institute, Daisaku Ikeda, said that in 1988 Dr. Swaminathan established the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation, and since then he had exercised outstanding leadership in India's rural and agricultural development."As newly elected President of Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, you are demonstrating vital leadership toward the abolition of nuclear weapons and in the cause of human security," the citation said.
