Chennai: When we start work on something, we might think that it will be finished soon, but the work may get extended. We must not give up, but must finish what we set out to do. In the absence of determination, even easy tasks will seem difficult. And when we undertake difficult tasks, we will be tempted to give up after a few tries. But the one who perseveres, is the one who succeeds, said Mathivannan, in a lecture.

One day a man visited Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, and told him of how his efforts to dig a well had proved futile. He first dug up to a depth of six feet, and since there was no sight of water, he abandoned that well, and dug another a little further away. This time he dug up to a depth of eight feet.

Again he found no water at that depth. So he abandoned that well too, and dug a third well some distance away. Here he dug to a depth of six feet, but here too he was disappointed, for there was no water. So the man was upset, because he did not know what to do.

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa laughed and told the man, that he could have been saved all this trouble, if he had only persevered. He had dug to a depth of six feet the first time, a depth of eight feet the second time and a depth of six feet the third time. Thus he had dug a total of 20 feet.

Had he not abandoned the first well, after digging up to six feet, but had dug up to 20 feet the first time, he might have found water. Instead, he was impatient for results, and his impatience had meant more work, but no positive outcome.

Quite a few people, who went on to become famous industrialists, did not have formal University education. They were not from wealthy or even well connected families. Yet they succeeded, because they worked hard.

They too would have had their share of disappointments. Had they given up the very first time there was a set back, they would not have become wealthy industrialists. They achieved their status through perseverance. Determination is the key to success.

Failure is only a stepping stone to success.
