Dated March 13, 1960: Education in Third Plan

The Union Education Ministry has estimated an outlay of Rs.980.06 crores for its schemes of development under the Third Five-Year Plan, according to sources in New Delhi on March 12. This amount is more than three and a half times the total expenditure for education under the Second Five-Year Plan, namely Rs.275 crores and more than five times than what was incurred under this head in the First Five-Year Plan, namely Rs.169 crores. The Union Education Ministry, which is understood to have submitted its draft plan to the Planning Commission last week, describes it as “realistic” in all aspects and “ambitious” in one project, namely, the introduction of compulsory and universal education for the 6-11 age group in the country.
