When boundaries blur

MANOJ IS ready to welcome Onam.

He and his friends, Tamilians settled in Kochi, are eager to celebrate the Kerala festival.

A hairdresser in a Vyttila parlour, Manoj will join his family at Nagercoil for Onam. "For us, the festival is an occasion to be with our families. But some of my friends wish to stay back in Kerala. They go around shopping and watching movies as there will be no work for two days after Thiruvonam," says Muthuswami, who works at Palarivattom.

Thousands of Tamilians have chosen Kochi as their home. Most of them work in the construction sector.

"We make sambar, aviyal and payasam for the Onam feast. We celebrate Onam just as we do Pongal," says Seethalakshmi.
