MADURAI: Walking might be a pain for some, but Raj Pandey, a 33-year-old businessman from Gujarat, walks to alleviate the pain of others.

The man is on a `padayatra' from Kanyakumari to New Delhi covering 16,255 kilometres. Having begun his walk on May 22, he has now reached Madurai after 465 km.

"I am on a mission to create awareness on the protection of minorities and Dalits, for the development of the poor, to create unity among youth and stress the need for a concerted fight against corruption," says Mr. Pandey.

Along the entire stretch of his yatra, covering 300 cities and towns including 28 capitals of States, the youth has planned to address students and youth forums at important joints.

"I will also collect the views of the younger generation on social issues and submit them to the Chief Ministers of the respective States," he adds.

Walking 30 km a day, Mr. Pandey has planned to end the yatra in February 2008 in New Delhi.

Yes, it is a long journey on the path that leads to the eradication of long pending social evils.
