United in campaign

NONE OTHER than artist B.D. Dattan drew first on the huge canvas put up along the pavement in front of the Secretariat to register his opposition to artificial soft drinks and consumerism.

The banner, which served as the canvas, was put up by the Plachimada Agitation Solidarity Committee as part of the get-together to oppose a judicial reprieve for a soft drinks firm in Palakkad district among other things. The meeting was inaugurated by the CPI assistant secretary, Panniyan Ravindran.

Within an hour, the canvas was full of caricatures and drawings, all expressing the concern of artists, Fine Arts students and laymen over the prolifertion of artificial soft drinks. G. Gopan drew over two dozen posters in black and white within an hour. They were aptly titled `Poisoned politics'. One of his posters depicted soft drinks bottles being dumped on human beings and a man crawling under their weight.
