Towering lamp

One of a kind

FOR A traditional brass lamp, it is a very tall one, and towers over most people who stand beside it. Crafted by skilled artisans, the lamp stands 70 inches tall, and was acquired by the Eechanari Sri Mahalakshmi Mandir Temple, at a cost of Rs. 78,800.

It had been placed on display at the `Karthigai Deepam' lamp exhibition, which began on November 6 at the Poompuhar Sales Showroom on Big Bazaar Street. Each tier in the lamp bears a number of wick holders in a symmetrical design that tapers upwards. This gives the lamp a firm and solid base, besides lowing its centre of gravity so that it will not easily topple over. Once lighted, the lamp can burn unattended for many hours, if the oil in each tier is regularly topped up, and the wicks trimmed if necessary. In view of the popularity of the lamps placed on display this year, Poompuhar has announced that the lamp exhibition would be extended up to November 30, with ten percent festival discount.
