They come out of shell and prove mettle

THE POOTHURAI village in Ritapuram panchayat near here is gradually transforming into a small factory for manufacturing coconut shell products.

The agents behind this sudden transformation are a group of women, who have formed a self-help group.

The women ceaselessly churn out various products made out of coconut shells such as neatly etched frames for pictures and other utility products and fancy items which find a ready use in households or offices.

The Collector, Rajesh Lakhoni, paid a visit to the village recently to personally ascertain the utility aspect of the products. The project is assisted by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development.

The Ceda Trust, a non-governmental organisation involved in promoting the group, had established the workshop for the SHG. Most of the products made here are marketed in Chennai and New Delhi.

The Collector lauded the women for their effort.

He was accompanied by the Assistant General Manager of the NABARD, P. Sadasivam.
