Stop selling degrees

Sir, -- The practice of giving admission to students in medical colleges on the basis of the amount of money their parents can shell out, is as bad as selling doctors' degree for a price. The college giving such admission produces `doctors' who have no academic brilliance or social commitment. At least half of the seats of each professional college should be filled strictly on merit and students acquiring admission on merit quota should be given concession on fees. The remaining seats may be allotted to those who are able to pay capitation fee, but again, admission should be made only as per the rank list.
