Bangalore: Students' Association of Fire Education (SAFE) was launched by Karnataka Fire Services in 2000-01 to create awareness on fire safety among schoolchildren here.

No other State in the country has such an initiative.

The programme was re-launched in 2003 by enrolling more schoolchildren. Karnataka Fire Services has selected 50 students from 20 high schools for fire safety training.

"We went to schools which are interested in training their students in fire safety measures. There will be one session a month," Chengappa, Joint Director of Karnataka Fire services, said.

Practical training in operating portable fire extinguishers, methods of summoning Fire Services, fire drills, rescue methodology and evacuation drill will be given to schoolchildren with the help of their teachers.

The faculty is from R.A Mundkur Fire Service College, Bannerghatta Road, for the programme.

After the training programme, certificates will be given to schoolchildren.
